Garumuni’s undergrad research aimed to develop β-cyclodextrin-benzoyl inclusion-based supramolecular networks in aqueous media that met one of the major requirements for forming a hydrogel for drug delivery: an enhanced sustained, targeted release profile and bioavailability. Engineered reactions were used to chemically modify β-cyclodextrin and benzoic acid with poly(ethylene glycol) and citric acid, respectively to synthesize host, guest building blocks. The designed blocks underwent self-assembly, forming supramolecular networks at room temperature, followed by characterization.
