Hashan Dananjaya Fernando
Data Science and Engineering (DSE)
Hashan Fernando is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Data Science and Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where his research focuses on topological data analysis, epidemiology, and machine learning. Currently, Hashan serves as a graduate research assistant at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, conducting geospatial studies on opioid overdose risks. His professional background includes previous roles as a graduate research assistant at the University of Peradeniya and a data scientist intern at VizuaMatix. Hashan received the Merit Award for his M.S. in Data Science. He recently presented his research at the Interdisciplinary Association for Population Health Science Conference and the International Population Data Linkage Network Conference.
Education
He holds an M.S. in Data Science and a B.Sc. in Statistics and Operations Research from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.
Research
His current work focuses on designing algorithms that leverage machine learning and topological data analysis to identify geospatial patterns of opioid overdose risk across the United States. Specifically, I investigate spatiotemporal vulnerabilities to understand the links between socioeconomic factors and opioid-related mortality.
Honors
Merit Scholarship Awarded for M.Sc. In Data Science
