Internships

Looking for options before attending graduate school? The Bredesen Center has many partnerships which offer internships for undergraduate or masters students.

Internships are an excellent way to improve your PhD experience by participating in research before you arrive.

SMaRT Internship Program

The UT-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute’s (UT-ORII) Student Mentoring and Research Training (SMaRT) is a paid, 10-week, summer research internship that will run from May 27 – July 31, 2025.

Engage in interdisciplinary research jointly administered by some of the nation’s top researchers from The University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors in the Fall 2025 semester are eligible to apply now for our SMaRT Internship Program.

Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE)

ORISE connects talented and diverse college students, graduate students, and recent graduates to internship programs across a variety of research projects and locations. Many Bredesen Center students experience ORNL in this way before they arrive. You may even find a mentor!
