Data Science and Engineering (DSE)

Tirthankar Ghosal is a Staff Scientist in the Computer Science and Mathematics Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where his work sits at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Laboratories, High-Performance Computing, and Quantum Information Science. He is the AI for Quantum lead and Principal Investigator of the Agentic AI for Quantum Software project at the Quantum Science Center, a US DOE National Quantum Information Science Research Center. He also leads the materials hypothesis generation research in FORUM-AI, a SciDAC project under the ASCR RAPIDS3 institute and part of the DOE Genesis Mission. Ghosal is the Principal Investigator of several projects in the AI for Laboratory Operations (R&D) portfolio; and the Principal Investigator of AI-driven operational and predictive data analytics and forecasting for leadership-class HPC systems. He holds an affiliate senior scientist appointment at the Berkeley Laboratory. He designed and teaches a graduate course on Large Language Models and Generative AI at the University of Tennessee Knoxville via UT-ORII. His current research asks how machines might participate in the scientific process rather than only accelerate it, spanning the generation and verification of scientific hypotheses, domain foundation models for astronomy and materials science, agentic software for quantum computing, and operational AI trustworthy enough to run in production at a national laboratory.
